The demands placed on Alpinists rise with every metre they climb. The air becomes thinner and thinner as they rise metre after metre. The type of terrain, the weather and the technical challenges – everything becomes more challenging. LOWA’s PRO Team has carefully taken all these factors into consideration. But that’s hardly surprising, as all of its members are active in the mountaineering community. The result of their collaboration is the ALPINE ICE GTX. It’s a real all-rounder, developed based on real-world knowledge, both inside and out!

This completely crampon-compatible boot is ready for all kinds of weather conditions thanks to its waterproof GORE-TEX membrane and elevated scree collar. The ALPINE ICE GTX is particularly outgoing when it comes to different types of terrain and simultaneous power transfer. It’s all possible thanks to its flat sole design. Naturally, LOWA worked hard on the inside of the boot, as well as its outer features. An anatomically-shaped last makes them comfortable to wear on any surface that an Alpinist might encounter. From the foot of the mountain to heights of 4,000 metres and above.

The perfect mix of hiking and climbing

Via ferrata are iron routes built on mountains. The route is usually well marked with a permanently installed steel cable. It’s a source of great adventure. Fixed steel pegs and ladders are used in places that are too steep or rock faces that lacks sufficient structure. In addition to normal via ferrata equipment, climbers need the right footwear.

    michael-schueppel

“The mix of climbing and hiking opens the way to spectacular routes that offer breath-taking views and creates very special experiences in the mountains.”

Michael | LOWA Head of Development

    • Generalist
As a rule of thumb, a good via ferrata boot is a generalist. After all, the route covers not just steps carved into rock and ladders, but also classic mountain trails, meadows and hiking paths.

    • Torsional stability
Climbers who are taking long tours or have to cover difficult passages need secure footing. This is why via ferrata boots offer exceptional torsional stability and give wearers firm footing even when they are carrying a full load.

Why do we need to go up there?

High-altitude tours belong to the Olympian class of mountaineering. During tours like these, mountaineers set off from the valley, take hiking paths, cross rock-covered terrain and trek through snow before reaching steep ice and firn flanks. High-altitude tours call for orientation skills, experience, climbing ability and sure footing cross alpine terrain. The right equipment is an absolute must for such tours. During high-altitude tours, mountaineers are part of a roped party or group and face all sorts of different terrains. They have to find their own way on snow, ice and rock.

    2020_lowa_arthur-kudelka

“A high-altitude tour combines a range of different skills and really puts the whole alpinist to the test. To succeed on these tours, you have to be able to handle everything nature throws at you: ice, snow and rock. That’s why it is so alluring.”

Arthur | LOWA Manager Service Department

LOWA’s expedition boots are outfitted with insulation made of GORE-TEX or PrimaLoft®.

    • Torsional stability
If you’re on an extended tour or lugging relatively heavy loads, you need secure footing. This is why high-altitude boots offer exceptional torsional stability and give wearers firm footing even when they are carrying a full load.

The hike to the wall – a real adventure

Fascinating climbing faces or challenging via ferrata – before you can start your adventure, you have to gain a little altitude. The hike to the starting point of the rock face or the climb is called the approach. The approach usually leads across rough terrain and frequently includes some sections to scramble as well.

“I regard the approach as well as the tour and the actual climbing as part of the same experience. You wake up and warm up.”

Josef Pfnür | LOWA ACTIVE Team

    • Climbing zone
A few rocky passages have to be cleared on the way to the rock face or the via ferrata. The sole of approach boots is equipped with a climbing zone for this purpose. The zone facilitates easier movement during small scrambling sections.

    • Generalist
Approach routes often vary significantly. For the boot to perfectly meet every challenge, it should be designed with a broad range of uses in mind.

    • Sole rigidity
You need to have stable footing when you venture across rough terrain. The soles of your boots need to have a certain degree of stiffness to perform this job.

    Along rock and ice formations

Ice climbing involves the scaling of ice formations like frozen waterfalls and icicles. Climbers use crampons and ice tools to scale the ice. Ice climbing is a special discipline of alpine climbing or mountaineering because all knowledge about alpine climbing is put to the test here. The same protective equipment needed for alpine climbing is used here as well. Mixed climbing is a combination of sport climbing and ice climbing. It may sound simple. But the ability to effectively move across such combined terrain is far from easy. Generally, climbers use crampons and ice tools to maintain their vertical position – just like ice climbing. Mixed routes are characterised by pronounced overhangs and difficult rock and ice formations.

    2020_lowa_arthur-kudelka

“Ice climbing is an alpine sport that demands absolutely everything you have. Endurance, strength, passion. Above all, your psyche plays a key role. It is a special type of challenge.”

Arthur | LOWA Manager Service Department

    • Insulation
Boots designed for ice and mixed climbing are outfitted with insulation made of GORE-TEX or PrimaLoft®.

    • Crampon welts
Anyone who traverses icy or mixed terrain needs crampon-compatible boots. LOWA ice-climbing boots have permanently affixed crampons or are designed to accept fully automatic crampons.

    • Sole rigidity
Boots with a torsionally stable sole play a very important role in a wearer’s ability to maintain stable footing while using crampons. This takes the load off foot muscles and combats fatigue.

  • Image photo with the CAMINO EVO GTX,

Why don’t we take the gondola?

A mountain hike involves a tour in highland terrain. This is the easiest way to explore the mountains. In principle, mountain hiking is something for everyone. The tours frequently use forest trails or paths. The higher the altitude of the hikes, the greater the degree of difficulty and the greater the need for experience, preparation, fitness, grip and a head for heights. Mountain hiking is a basic form of mountain climbing. The transition is frequently seamless.

“I have not walked the Camino de Santiago, but as a mountain guide have covered scores of kilometres wearing my LOWA shoes.”

Josef Pfnür | LOWA ACTIVE Team

    • Stability
To ensure sufficient grip during hikes, both the sole and the upper should be stable.

    • Comfortable
Comfortable footwear is essential for long distances covered on foot. This is why LOWA places such a high priority on exact fit, something that is perfectly designed to handle short or long strolls.

Adventures of discovery at the end of the world

Remote areas and uncharted terrain: Expeditions are trips of discovery and research that take people to remote or unexplored regions of the world. In the Alps, such expeditions frequently involve mountain climbing on heavily glaciated terrain that is difficult to manoeuvre across. But expeditions on flat terrain also appeal to many adventurers. These types of journeys usually pass through areas that are far from civilisation and, as a result, lack such infrastructure as roads, hospitals and accommodations.

Bildauswahl Sarntaler Hufeisen Alix von Melle

“On expeditions I have to leave my comfort zone every time. But my reward is a range of experiences that money can’t buy: sunsets from a high-camp perspective and breathtaking views of untamed mountain peaks or glistening mountain lakes.”

LOWA’s expedition boots are outfitted with insulation made of GORE-TEX or PrimaLoft®.

    • Crampon welts
The boots are also equipped with crampon welts to help wearers to traverse icy surfaces or rough terrain.

    • Gaiters

Verdict: Best insulation in the test

“The Alpine Ice from Lowa looks bulky. All the more surprising, then, is the low weight – and, when you slip into it, the great wearing comfort. The classic lacing does what it should, has a good deep draw hook and ensures the best heel fit (ice climbing!). The straight and frontally placed zipper of the gaiter is easy to operate. The insulation of the Lowa Ice is the best in the test and the cushioning is also good.”

If your boots had eyes Focus on the experience

Anyone who returns home after a long hiking tour knows that feeling of gratitude. Gratitude for breathtaking days spent in the great outdoors, for spectacular moments and for snug boots that safely took the hiker up the mountains and back down again. Many hikers have a very special relationship with their hiking boots. They are something more than just another pair of shoes in the closet. They are more like a hiking partner and a real companion. For a few, they even become something that can only be described as friends. Hikers just can’t do without them. The boots fit like a glove and accompany us everywhere – as they should. Sometimes you wonder: What would the boots say if they could talk? What would they tell us? What have they seen?

LOWA x GORE-TEX – Nature Clean-Up

Nature provides us with all sorts of unique opportunities to experience unforgettable adventures and enjoy very special moments. More and more people are making a conscious decision to get back in tune with nature. But the decision by more and more people to get back in tune with nature also results in a greater and greater impact on the environment. You hear words like “awareness” and “mindfulness” a lot in discussions about this trend – but what exactly do people mean when they use them? An example: The practise of taking your trash home with you after a tour now comes second nature to many people. Such steps, no matter how tiny they may seem, can be the key to a mindful and sustainable outdoor lifestyle. But if you look around outdoors, you will certainly see many places that certainly have room for improvement.

CLOSE TO THE GROUND For direct contact with the ground

People who venture across Alpine terrain face many challenges. Fields of loose rocks, rocky outcrops and rough terrain place the highest demands on footwear. For this reason, LOWA uses the technologies of CLOSE TO THE GROUND in the ALPINE ICE GTX to create a good feel on the surface. The sole is designed in such a way that the distance to the ground is kept to a bare minimum. The height minimisation throughout the entire shoe creates a natural feel during challenging tours and provides stable footing on uneven terrain.

The Performance collection The development of a high-performance line

When LOWA sits down to develop its line of Alpine boots, the company consults with the best professional mountaineers in the German-speaking world. These ambitious mountain athletes know exactly what counts during extreme high-altitude tours, on via ferrata and during far-off expeditions. The LOWA PRO Team advises our specialists in the Development Department in its work to create footwear that perfectly meets the athletes’ needs. The result of this work is a new line that delivers top performance on the mountain. The models have become much more athletic and lighter. Over the past few years, a number of exceptional LOWA boots have been developed in the “performance” segment during countless meetings with athletes and testing events.

Polyurethane (PU)

Polyurethane (PU) is a soft plastic that has very good cushioning properties and is usually used in the midsole as a result. Through the use of PU, the soles become lightweight and functionally flexible.

Approx. 20%
Thermoplastic polyurethane

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is like classic polyurethane in many ways. But it differs from it in one special aspect: the process used to produce it. As a result, TPU is more abrasion and slip resistant. It also has a very high degree of kink and tensile strength. Thanks to improved weather resistance, the qualities of a sole made from TPU are more constant even when temperatures fluctuate, an especially important aspect of our leisure-time winter models.

EVA

The acronym “EVA” stands for “ethylene-vinyl acetate”. It corresponds to an elastomeric polymer that is used to make plastic materials. The EVA material creates soft and flexible qualities. It is primarily used in the production of shoe and shoe midsoles to provide step cushioning. Various degrees of rigidity can be achieved on the basis of the thickness employed.
